Still Don’t Understand Hockey?
By bettingfool | October 5, 2007
The 2007-08 NHL season is underway. Yet another opportunity to make some money. If you think baseball’s traditionalist-minded commentators help make that sport a betting bonanza, you should check out what passes for conventional hockey “analysis” these days.
Hockey doesn’t lend itself as easily to advanced statistics as baseball does. But the sport is still awash in stats, and there is a growing community of puckheads committed to finding better ways to evaluate players by the numbers. You can access their work and use it to your handicapping advantage.
Over the last five years or so, puckheads have been taking “shots on goal” and breaking that number down to reflect shot quality. By charting what kind of shots goalies face from game to game, we get a better handle on how many goals a team is likely to allow. To quote the legendary Steve Buzinski, it’s like picking cherries off a tree.
