Betting on American Idol: Will David Archuleta Win?
By Igor Ivanov | March 20, 2008
David Archuleta? Doesn’t he play safety for the Chicago Bears?
That’s about how much I know about American Idol. But that can be a good thing when it comes to betting the entertainment futures market: no bias toward any one contestant.
You don’t need to know a fugue from a flugelhorn to know that Archuleta is a much better value at 3-2 to win than at +110 to win. The former bet pits Archuleta against his 10 remaining opponents in a “horse race” to the finish, while the latter is a win/lose proposition with Archuleta priced at –150 to lose.
The public has spoken: Archuleta’s version of John Lennon’s Imagine has already hit No. 1 on the iTunes chart, and iTunes happens to be a major sponsor of the show. Based on this alone, I would feel more comfortable laying $50 on Archuleta than on most March Madness games. The bonus: I can listen to the original song instead.
