Betting on the Right Candidate to Win the US Presidential Election
By Igor Ivanov | November 9, 2007

Tuesday was Election Day in the United States. This year wasn’t too busy, just three gubernatorial races and assorted smaller offices up for grabs. But next year is the Big One: the general election, including a guaranteed new president.
Who’s it going to be? The current favorite is Hillary Clinton at 10-11, followed by Rudy Giuliani at 3-1 and Barack Obama at 9-2. If you’re looking at laying a political wager, it’s crucial to forget everything you know about sports betting, and follow the betting public. They’re the ones voting, after all.
This is also where the political futures markets come in handy. Over at Intrade, Ms. Clinton was trading at $46.50 at press time. She was followed by Giuliani at $17.70 and Mitt Romney at $10. Obama was fourth at $6.50. The final payout is $100, so Clinton at 10-11 (47.6 percent) may be a slight bargain as well the big favorite.
